Professor Colleen Campbell’s research applies critical and interdisciplinary lenses to issues of race and gender at the intersection of medicine, public health law, and regulatory law. Her research examines how institutional and systemic processes impact Black women across various domains, including reproduction, birth, and health. This work sheds light on how Black women negotiate with medical spaces that police their bodies in ways that mirror the surveillance and regulation of Black bodies within society.
Her article in the Michigan Journal of Race and the Law, “Medical Violence, Obstetric Racism, and the Limits of Informed Consent for Black Women,” examines law and bioethical issues in obstetrics, including the limits of informed consent for Black women because of systemic obstetric violence and obstetric racism. In a forthcoming publication in the University of Colorado Law Review, “Intersectionality Matters in Food and Drug Law,” she writes about the inequities in food and drug law and its disparate impact on Black women. This article calls attention to the intersections of race, gender, and skin color hierarchies in the beauty industry. It also argues for an intersectional approach to food and drug law and more stringent regulation of personal care products that are disproportionately used by women of color.
At Hofstra she teaches torts, administrative law, and reproductive rights and justice. Prior to joining Hofstra Law, she was an Acting Assistant Professor of Lawyering at NYU School of law. Prior to entering the academy, she was a public interest lawyer supporting labor unions, including the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and the AFL-CIO in Washington, DC.
Professor Campbell holds a BA (summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa) from Connecticut College. She received a JD from UC Law SF (formerly UC Hastings College of the Law) and a PhD from Princeton University in sociology.
