Upper-Level Scholarships

As an upper-level student, you have the opportunity to receive substantial scholarship support thanks to generous funding from alumni and other members of the Hofstra Law community.

Below is a list of available upper-level scholarships, including the following information for each: the range of the award, a short description of the scholarship, key criteria and a link to the application.


APALSA/SALSA ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP

Range of award: $3,000-$5,000

Awarded to a student(s) who has demonstrated a commitment to the Asian-Pacific American Law Students Association (APALSA) and/or the South Asian Law Student Association (SALSA), strong academic performance (with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0) and financial need.

Established by John Bae ’89 and Fusae Nara ’91 and other APALSA/SALSA alumni.

JESSE R. BAKER MEMORIAL ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP

Award Amount: $5,000

Awarded to an upper-level student(s) who has an interest in the field of housing rights or real estate law and/or has demonstrated service to a disadvantaged community during his or her time at Hofstra Law. Preference given to a student(s) with demonstrated financial need.

Established by the law firm of Gutman, Mintz, Baker & Sonnenfeldt, P.C. and Beverly Baker ’97, in memory of the firm’s partner and Mrs. Baker’s husband, Jesse R. Baker ’79.

CERTILMAN BALIN ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP

(Amount of award: $5,000 – split equally between 2nd and 3rd years)

Awarded to a 2L student who demonstrates financial need and academic achievement. Preference is given to a student who resides in Nassau, Suffolk or Queens counties and has an interest in working on Long Island after law school.

BLACK LAW STUDENTS ALUMNI ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP

Range of award: $1,000-$2,000

Awarded to a student(s) in good standing who is a member of the Black Law Students Association for at least one year, has a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75, demonstrates a commitment to public service, and demonstrates academic achievement and financial need.

Established by the Black Law Students Alumni Association.

LINDA CARMODY-ROBERTS ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP IN TRUSTS & ESTATES/ELDER LAW

Range of award: $5,000-$6,000

Awarded to a student pursuing a career in the area of trusts and estates, particularly in elder law.

Established by George Roberts in memory of his wife, Linda Carmody-Roberts ’74.

Class of 1991 Leadership Scholarship

Amount of Award: $12,000 (split between 2nd and 3rd years)

Awarded to a 2L with demonstrated leadership and outstanding academic performance.

Established in honor of the Class of 1991’s 25th reunion.


JONATHAN FALK MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP

Range of award: $3,000-$8,000

Awarded to an outstanding student(s) who exhibits academic excellence, leadership and a concern for peers, as well as an interest in labor law.

Established in memory of Jonathan Falk ’77, an associate at the firm Jackson, Lewis, Schnitzler & Krupman specializing in labor law, by his friends and family.

SARI M. FRIEDMAN ’77, ’80 ENDOWED LAW SCHOLARSHIP

Range of award: $3,000-$5,000

Awarded to a deserving student (or students) based on academic achievement and/or financial need, with preference given to a student with a concentration in family law.

Established by Sari M. Friedman ’77, ’80.

Joey Jackson ’95 Annual Scholarship

Award Amount: $20,000 (split between 2nd and 3rd years)

Awarded to a 2L with academic potential and a demonstrated history of engagement with and/or commitment to the betterment of the Black Community.

Established by Joey Jackson ’95.


SIDNEY AND PEARL KALIKOW ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP

Range of award: $1,000-$2,000

Awarded to an upper-level student who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and financial need.

Established by Edward Kalikow ’78 in memory of his parents, Sidney and Pearl Kalikow.

LALSA ENDOWED ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP

Range of award: $3,000-$5,000

Awarded by the LALSA Alumni Scholarship Fund Committee to provide economic support to those students who exhibit a commitment to the Latino community and/or to the Hofstra University Chapter of the Latino/a Law Students Association, financial need for additional resources with which to finance their legal education, and academic promise (with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75) toward completing a J.D. degree at Hofstra University.

Lambrou Law Firm Annual Scholarship

Amount of Award: $5,000

Awarded to an upper-level law student with demonstrated proficiency in Torts and an interest in trial practice.

Established by the Labrou Law Firm.

ONE HUNDRED BLACK MEN OF LONG ISLAND ENDOWED LAW SCHOLARSHIP

Range of award: $3,000-$4,000

Established by One Hundred Black Men of Long Island to support the education of outstanding students at Hofstra Law.

The Bonnie J. Oringer ’84 Breast Cancer Awareness Scholarship

Amount of Award: $2,500

Awarded to an upper-level student who is a breast cancer survivor, has an immediate family member who has/had breast cancer causing a significant impact on the candidate’s life, or has demonstrated he/she is an advocate for breast cancer prevention and has devoted a substantial amount of time and effort in furtherance of the cause.

JOSEPH M. RIZZO MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP

Range of award: $1,000-$2,000

Awarded to a deserving upper-level law student (or students) who demonstrates academic achievement and an interest in pursuing a career in criminal law.

Established by Jessica Zimmerman ’04, the Rizzo family and friends in memory of Joseph M. Rizzo.

(Amount of award: $1,000)

Awarded to a Hofstra Law student with a disability and demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to a student with an interest in pursuing a career in public service.

JAMES J. SAMPLE COMMITMENT TO STUDENTS AWARD

Range of award: $1,000-$2,000

Awarded to a current 3L who has shown dedication to helping their class and who has shown a strong commitment to bettering student life at Hofstra Law.

Originally established by the Class of 2015 in recognition of Professor James J. Sample and supported by subsequent graduating classes.


ROBERT AND MICHELLE WALLACH FAMILY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP

Range of award: $1,000-$2,000

Awarded to a deserving student studying Family Law selected based on academic achievement or potential and demonstrated financial need.

Established by Michelle Wallach ’94 and her husband, Robert Wallach.

GERALD G. WRIGHT ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP

Range of award: $2,000-$13,000

Awarded to an upper level student who demonstrates financial need, a commitment to helping others now and in the future, and a sense of obligation to give back to the school and the scholarship when his/her circumstances allow.
